Nokia and Sonera mark a milestone by showing advanced mobile services and terminals in Sonera’s WCDMA 3G network

At a landmark 3G event in Helsinki, Finland, Nokia and Sonera demonstrated the evolution of mobile communications towards increasingly advanced 3G mobile services and devices. Both companies also reinforced their commitment to the development of interoperable mobile multimedia services and technologies. The companies further reaffirmed their frontrunner position by exhibiting live demonstrations of advanced Sonera services using the Nokia 6650 - the world’s first 3GPP-compliant dual-mode WCDMA/GSM terminal, also introduced today.

The practical and easy-to-use mobile Sonera services demonstrated to media representatives from around the globe at Kiasma, the Helsinki Museum of Contemporary Art, are also the first to use the Nokia 6650 in a live WCDMA network environment, marking an important milestone in the progress of 3G. The wide range of advanced services introduced today blend picture messaging, video clips, games and e-mail into a rich service offering. These advanced services can be delivered seamlessly using both GSM/GPRS and WCDMA evolution phases of current mobile communications technologies.

The development of next-generation mobile terminals such as the Nokia 6650, combined with attractive service development, will further accelerate the take-off of new advanced 3G mobile services. Openness and interoperability will meanwhile result in the seamless use of services across networks and borders, enhancing user experience and volume usage.Senior representatives of Nokia and Sonera speaking at Kiasma outlined how they see 3G services developing in the coming months.

Sony Ericsson unveils the T100 mobile phone

- Sony Ericsson unveiled the T100 mobile phone. The T100 will attract modern young people who appreciate attractive design, ease-of-use and, core features at an affordable price. The phone features enhanced messaging capabilities and will start shipping in Q4 2002.The T100 is small in size and gives a glimpse of the new industrial design that is coming from Sony Ericsson, capturing the simplicity and minimalism of Scandinavian and Japanese design.

Preliminary consumer research findings have been very positive, with comments such as �right in fashion� and �looks more expensive than it is�. The phone is presented in three contemporary colorings, Icy Blue, Gentle Gold and Fresh White. The T100 is small and light, measuring only 99 x 43.5 x 17.7 mm and weighs a mere 75 grams. It has up to 4.5 hours of talk time and up to 200 hours (more than 8 days) of stand-by timeSeveral GSM markets have a strong need for a high-volume, low-priced phone with all the core voice and messaging features.

Developed mainly for the low-price segment, the new T100 offers great value and offers consumers EMS-messaging with pictures, sound and animations, and mobile Internet browsing with WAP. It features an extensive gallery with 30 pictures, 15 animations and 10 sounds, which can be sent and there are 10 SMS templates for often used messages. If that�s not enough, a new image can be created with a picture editor.

Launch of T-Mobile HotSpot service in Starbucks stores

High-speed wireless Internet access becomes faster, simpler and more convenient today as Starbucks Coffee Company, T-Mobile International, the wireless subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom AG, and HP officially launch T-Mobile HotSpot service in Starbucks coffeehouses. This was announced on a press conference in San Francisco with John Stanton, Chairman of VoiceStream, the T-Mobile U.S. Operations, Howard Schultz, Starbucks chairman and chief global strategist, and Michael Capellas, president of HP.

As easy as ordering their latte, Starbucks customers can check e-mail, surf the Web, watch streaming video or download multi-media presentations in the comfort of Starbucks via a fast, reliable standards based wireless Internet connection for notebook computers and Pocket PCs. Starting today, Starbucks customers can trial T-Mobile HotSpot service for free at approximately 1,200 Starbucks stores in the United States. An additional 800 Starbucks locations in the U.S. are scheduled to feature the service by the end of the year.

With an eye toward global expansion, Starbucks and T-Mobile have also initiated a six-month pilot in select London and Berlin locations.T-Mobile HotSpot service uses standards based “Wi-Fi” (802.11b) technology and is easily accessible for Starbucks customers with a wireless-ready notebook computer or Pocket PC. Backed by T-1 connections in popular venues in the U.S., T-Mobile HotSpot service is reliable and fast enough to accommodate the full spectrum of applications from checking e-mail to multi-media video conferencing with a high-speed wireless connection as much as 40 to 50 times faster than standard dial-up Internet access.

Nokia introduces the world’s first handset for WCDMA and GSM networks

- Nokia announced the world’s first 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) compliant mobile phone operating both in the GSM 900/1800 frequencies and on the WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) protocol. One of the benefits of the WCDMA radio interface in the Nokia 6650 phone is it allows running more than one data session simultaneously.This makes it possible, for example, to capture and share what the user sees whilst talking on the phone. The dual-mode functionality makes the Nokia 6650 phone the world’s first GSM/WCDMA handset to work in Europe and Asia including Japan.

The first deliveries for operator-controlled live network tests of the Nokia 6650 phone will start during fourth quarter, 2002. Nokia N82 Mobile Phone Low Down

The Nokia N82 was launched on the 14th November, 2007. It’s the latest mobile phone released in the Nokia Nseries. Of course, the Nseries handsets that came before the N82 have done really well with its best performer being the N95. The N95 was launched on 26th September, 2006 which is surprisingly well over a year ago so we are hoping that the N82 feature set has moved on well in advance of the N95.

Ericsson announces strategic partnerships to speed up market take-off for public WLAN

Ericsson chooses Agere and Proxim to jointly develop and supply telecom operators with complete end-to-end solutions for WLAN (Wi-Fi) access, integrating hot spot access with mobile 2G and 3G networks. Local access to high-speed data (called WLAN or Wi-Fi) is an increasingly important service for users of handheld devices like laptops and notebook computers.Ericsson believes that integrating indoor and Public WLAN “Wi-Fi hotspots” with mobile 2G and 3G networks is a winning business concept for the future.The unique combination of the three undisputed leaders in WLAN-technology and mobile systems respectively will ensure that mobile operators get a leading edge in this fast growing market.

The new partnership brings new benefits to both operators and end-users. This is a part of Ericsson’s “Always best connected” concept. Nokia broadband iTV services for fixed network operators

Nokia and Orca Interactive Ltd, a provider of interactive television (iTV) applications that allow service delivery to multiple consumer devices, have signed a cooperative marketing agreement to enable the delivery of high-bandwidth video and TV type of services over DSL-based networks. The two companies have also completed integration of their respective product sets. Delivery of the integrated solution to a fixed network operator in Taiwan is currently underway and will be used for its media on demand (MoD) service to be launched this year.

The agreement covers cooperative marketing of each other’s products in broadband customer cases, as well as integration of Orca software with Nokia access and edge products, ensuring the compatibility and interoperability of Orca software applications and Nokia broadband products. The agreement will also ensure that Orca’s multi-device and multi-network delivery modes, in this case over ADSL and VDSL, are supported by the broadband network equipment.“Over the last few months we have been working very closely with Orca to create systems that can deliver full streamed video and TV-type content simply and at a reasonable cost,” says Mr. Ari Lehtoranta, Vice President, Broadband Systems, Nokia Networks. “The Orca software has already been successfully integrated into the Nokia broadband products.

Nokia demonstrates user, terminal and service mobility in broadband DSL networks

At the Broadband World Forum in Berlin, Germany, Nokia is showcasing a truly integrated solution that will allow operators to bring mobility to their broadband service offering today. The Nokia demonstration shows how broadband operators can enjoy the first benefits of a converged service portfolio that can provide subscriber, terminal and service mobility across their broadband networks.The show demonstration network combines the Nokia D500 multiservice access broadband platform, the Nokia Operator WLAN Access Point and Controller, Nokia Intelligent Edge solutions and the Nokia Authentication Server into a network that shows how broadband operators and service providers can introduce mobility services to their broadband subscribers. portfolio will allow greater access for subscribers and thus greater revenue potential for operators, ” says Ari Lehtoranta, Vice President, Broadband Systems, Nokia Networks. “Converged services are an as-yet untapped revenue generator for broadband fixed operators.”Subscriber, terminal and service mobility using username/password authentication and personal user profiles demonstrates how users can access their service from any location, whether on their own wired or wireless PC/laptop at home or on a friend’s PC/laptop elsewhere.

Even if the friend has a lower service level, Nokia’s solution allows users to access their own service level.The Nokia demonstration network also shows how user mobility can be achieved based on roaming using SIM authentication. A mobile subscribers who have no fixed broadband account can still access their SIM-based services via their own or a friend’s PC/laptop terminal if the subscriber’s mobile operator has a commercial agreement with the fixed network operator.

Public 3G call made in Latvia

Latvian operator LMT has made the first public WCDMA 3G call in Latvia, using a Nokia test network. The demonstration showcased a series of services including streaming, Internet browsing, downloading, and video telephony, at data speeds of up to 380 kilobits/second. Juris Binde, LMT president, performed the call and data applications at LMT premises using the commercially available Nokia 7600 phone.

Nokia has supplied a full WCDMA 3G test network to LMT, including both 3G radio and core network equipment, as well as 3G terminals. The test network and the 3G call demonstrated today enable LMT to completely evaluate the technical advantages of Nokia’s 3G technology. The call also accelerates LMT’s roadmap to offer Latvia’s first commercial WCDMA 3G service by the end of 2004. “This 3G call is a significant milestone in LMT’s deployment of advanced mobile services,” says Juris Binde, President, LMT. “We are leading the way with state-of-the-art service in Latvia, and are confident that we are firmly on track to be the first here with commercial 3G service.” “We are very pleased to be a part of this important demonstration,” says Jan Lindgren, Vice President, Nokia Networks. “The test network and services Nokia has provided to LMT underlines the readiness of our WCDMA 3G solution for commercial service.”
